How modern chase ladders work on Cards

The ladder is social, not printed

Card boxes print rarities. Collectors build ladders. A Special Illustration Rare (SIR) can sit above a plain Illustration Rare of the same Pokémon because the art treatment, pull rate story, and binder demand stack — not because a code in the set list says so. Alt arts from older SV and SWSH eras still hold ladder rungs people defend in trades. Vintage Base-through-Neo chase occupies another stack entirely: scarcer graded copies, nostalgia weight, and a different buyer pool. On Collectrio Cards those stories show up as relative Sleeve / Swap / Store strength on /cards/rankings, not as dollar scrapes.

When you open /cards and rank a trio, you are placing three names on that social ladder for one lens. Sleeve says “this belongs higher in my hold stack.” Swap says “I would move this for something peer.” Store says “this frees a slot.” The public Elo on /methodology turns those comparisons into the board number. The ladder is whatever the crowd keeps defending.

SIR and alt rungs on modern sets

Modern chase ladders usually start with SIR and top-tier Illustration treatments, then step down through regular Illustration Rares, ultra-rares that still see binder demand, and finally playable foils people Swap for list copies. That order is sticky on Binder lens because collectors vote with display intent. On Value lens the same SIR can slide if the crowd treats it as liquid Swap bait rather than a forever Sleeve — liquidity and binder pride are not the same vote.

Alt arts that already had years of circulation often sit mid-ladder: still chase enough to Sleeve against new set fluff, but Swap-friendly when someone needs a specific modern SIR. Rank a modern SIR against an older alt and a playable EX on Binder at /cards — the SIR usually takes Sleeve if the art story is loud. Flip to Value and watch whether the older alt’s Swap history pulls closer. That tension is the ladder working.

Vintage is a parallel ladder

Vintage chase does not compete on the same emotional axis as a brand-new SIR. Base Set shadows, WOTC promos, and early EX-era icons carry nostalgia and condition anxiety that modern pull-rate chatter never quite matches. On Collectrio, vintage names belong in Binder comparisons with other vintage or true forever holds — not smashed against every modern chase just because both are “expensive feeling.”

If your decision is “do I Sleeve this Charizard-adjacent vintage vs Swap a modern SIR pile,” stay on Binder and be honest about which story you are living. Value lens can still inform package math on /cards/calculator, but nostalgia weight often fails Value fairness tests. That is fine. Use Value to know you are paying a premium; use Binder to decide whether you want that premium in the binder.

When Binder beats Value

Pick Binder when the decision is about what stays in the display binder, what you would grade, or what you refuse to break up for depth. Binder beats Value when a name’s crowd Swap liquidity is high but you personally will not move it — Collectrio’s Value board can say Swap-friendly while your binder rule says Sleeve forever. Rank the trio on Binder so your vote matches the question.

Pick Value when you are building a fair Swap package, filling holes with liquid names, or checking whether a chase line is carrying too much of a deal. Open /cards/calculator with Value ranks loaded after you unlock the board. If Binder and Value disagree hard, read /guides/lens-conflicts before you force one number to settle an emotional hold.

Playable sits off to the side of chase ladders: a format staple can outrank a pretty IR on Playable while sitting Fringe on Binder. Do not use Playable to settle chase hierarchy. Use it when the trade is literally for the list.

Practical ranking loop for chase

Start on Binder. Pick three names that actually compete on your ladder — two modern chase pieces and one vintage, or three SIRs from adjacent sets — and assign Sleeve / Swap / Store once. That unlocks /cards/rankings for the session. Scan Elite and High tiers for names near your chase. Then flip to Value and note which of those Elite Binder names drop or rise. The ones that stay Elite on both lenses are ladder locks. The ones that fall on Value are binder premiums.

When a package includes one ladder-top chase and a pile of depth, do not average feelings — use /guides/calculator-uneven-packages and the calculator modifiers. Condition (NM / LP / MP) matters more on vintage and graded-adjacent holds than on fresh modern SIR in sleeve. Keep the package on Cards only; never drag a GO name into the fairness story. Store is not “bad chase”

Store on a chase-adjacent name means “I would rather free the slot than fight for binder space,” not “this card is trash.” Modern sets dump a lot of mid-Illustration product that is pretty and still not your ladder. Voting Store against two real chase pieces teaches the board that mid art loses Binder comparisons — that is useful signal, not an insult. If you only ever Sleeve everything shiny, the board learns nothing about Swap liquidity. Mix honest Store votes into chase trios when the third name is filler art. The ladder sharpens when people admit what they would actually leave in bulk boxes.

Reading the chase board without FOMO

Trend on /cards/rankings is seven-day movement from new trios, not a marketplace spike. A SIR can trend up because three collectors ranked it Sleeve in Binder this week — or sit flat while Discord screams. Read /guides/trend-without-noise before you Swap a forever hold because of a bump. Conviction frameworks at /guides/ranking-frameworks help separate “I believe this ladder rung” from “I need cash-like liquidity.”

Checklist before you Sleeve modern chase

Ask which lens owns the decision. Confirm the competing names belong on the same ladder story. Unlock with one honest trio. Compare Binder vs Value placement. Only then open the calculator. If Value says the package is a favor and Binder says you still want the chase, call it a favor out loud — do not launder desire through a false fairness score.
